How do Addicted Brains Differ from Nonaddicted Brains?

چکیده
It gives me a great deal of pleasure to introduce this critical review of the neuroimaging science of addictive disorders written by E. Laura Wright, CRNA, PhD, MNA. Wright has recently joined the Health and Wellness Committee’s Peer Assistance Advisors Committee. Her doctoral research focused on those resilience factors that were part of the shared experience of CRNAs in long-term recovery from chemical dependency. The evolving neuroscience that is beginning to define the persistent morphological and physiological alterations that are mediated by the processes involved in neuroplasticity are essential to our understanding of how the alterations in brain functioning parallel the alterations in physiology of other chronic diseases such as coronary artery disease. These diffuse alterations in brain physiology and downstream motivation, learning, and behaviors underpin the chronic, progressive nature of addictive disorders. I thank Dr. Wright for her significant contributions to our understanding of the neuroscience, particularly as it applies to our recovering colleagues.

Avatar's neurobiological traces in the self-concept of massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) addicts.
Psychometric studies suggest that observed self-concept deficits in addicted massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) are compensated through the replacement of their ideal (i.e., how an individual would like to be) by their own avatar (i.e., graphical agent in the virtual world). Neurobiological studies indicate that increased identification with their own avatar in regular MMOR...
متن کاملImaging the Addicted Human Brain
Modern imaging techniques enable researchers to observe drug actions and consequences as they occur and persist in the brains of abusing and addicted individuals. This article presents the five most commonly used techniques, explains how each produces images, and describes how researchers interpret them. The authors give examples of key findings illustrating how each technique has extended and ...

Brains and computers are both dynamical systems that manipulate symbols, but they differ fundamentally in their architectures and operations. Human brains do mathematics; computers do not. Computers manipulate symbols that humans put into them without grounding them in what they represent. Human brains intentionally direct the body to make symbols, and they use the symbols to represent internal...

متن کاملIsolation of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale from the brains of commercial broiler breeder chickens with meningitis and encephalitis
Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) has been identified as one of the respiratory bacterial pathogens in turkey and chicken flocks. Four live birds displaying severe torticollis were submitted from a 13-week-old commercial broiler breeder chicken flock located in Mazandaran province. These birds were suspected to pasteurellosis by the farm veterinarian. No other marked gross lesion except ema...
